Barefoot Architects were appointed in Spring 2018 to work closely with Ambition Lawrence Weston and local residents to ‘co-design’ 40 new affordable homes on a former council site in North Bristol.
We have worked extensively with local residents to develop a project with and for them. The project is a close collaboration between the client (ALW), the City Council, and housing association United Communities.
The design has evolved through a series of workshops with the wider community, neighbours to the site, and prospective residents. We have used a variety of engagement methods to help define their concerns and priorities, and to test and interrogate design options. These include ‘planning for real’ type workshops with physical models, and use of virtual reality 3D computer design.
The project was granted planning permission in 2021, and will hope to deliver truly affordable homes for local people in the near future.
