abingdon extension
Located within the Abingdon Conservation area, and next to a Listed Church, this project extends a Victorian semi-detached brick and stone family house.
The design concept for the alterations is based upon the pitched roof extensions, common to the backs of these properties, and is conceived as a series of 'Russian Doll' extrusions.
Each successive addition is smaller than the previous so that their scale cascades downwards towards the garden. Many of the individual 'dolls' replace existing low grade extensions. The materiality for the project is in turn a series of folded zinc roofs, which wrap around to expose glazed gable ends with a strong rhythm of glazing. The internal 'linings' to each piece are a softer, natural timber - warm in appearance, touch and texture - with the Douglas fir structure left exposed.
