Concept Design and Model-Making

April 29, 2020

We’re excited to be progressing the design for a new house near Salisbury. The plan layout is undergoing change but Rob couldn’t resist making a model to express the initial Concept massing ideas; 3 single-storey ‘barns’ surrounding a two-storey core ‘house’ form. Tectonically, we’re exploring ideas of mass/permanence vs light weight and adaptable elements, while incorporating some local vernacular materials (chalk and/or flint) and some agricultural references.

As with a lot of our work, the landscape design is integral to the project and is being developed along with the building plans and massing.

To further connect the house and landscape we’re exploring the idea of using some of the site material to create thermal mass in the main house ‘core’ as well as in some external structures. This is expressed in the model - using the same material for the base/site and the house core.
