Barefoot Tries Modern Meditation!

Barefoot tries modern meditation

Last week, the Barefoot team went to Bridge Farm in Bristol for our quarterly team away day. We spent the day exploring Modern Meditation based practices with Mick Timpson from beanddo, learning about “flow”, and taking some time to reflect on the year so far. It was a great opportunity for the Bristol and Totnes offices to come together for a day of contemplation, meditation and creativity.

The workshop focused on four key principles: attention, awareness, attitude and action.

Sam was pleased with the day’s activities!

The session involved a series of drawing exercises, in which we were encouraged to focus on process and non-judgemental creative action, rather than output. For our team of architects and designers - where aesthetics and output often become a focus of our work – the workshop encouraged many of us to challenge existing habits and shift (unconscious) perceptions on creativity.

As a retired architect himself, Mick was able to guide us through this process, give examples of common stumbling blocks (such as perfectionism getting in the way of creative expression), and explain how modern meditation practices can help designers enter a state of “flow”.

As a team, we particularly enjoyed a large scale collaborative drawing session, in which we created two linear abstract drawings.

Following the workshop, it will be interesting to see how we can apply the practices learnt to our work at Barefoot and life outside the practice.
