How Do We Design Happy Homes?

The importance mental wellbeing in architectural design

By Kate Hutchinson

Since the pandemic, when so many of us were confined indoors for extended periods of time, a growing awareness has developed, both within the architectural profession and in wider public conversation, about the impact of our built environment on our mental wellbeing. This applies in particular to the design of our homes, which in so many cases are lacking simple features that could make the experience of daily living much more enjoyable for the user.

As designers, we have a responsibility to consider the mental impact of the spaces we design at every stage of the design process. While this applies to all building projects, it is particularly important to us at Barefoot, as a large proportion of our work involves housing and community projects.

So how can we design buildings and spaces that contribute in a positive way to the mental wellbeing of their users? This is a topic which we address and reflect upon throughout the design process of every project.

One of the first, and perhaps most important, steps is to work in a collaborative way with the client to define and develop their project brief, so that our design proposals are closely aligned with the needs of the end user.

We design for the mental and sensory experience of the building user, ensuring “special moments” are included in every building, which are specific to the client and the site – for example, a discrete reading corner or a special family dining space. We use natural and warm materials to make a building feel like home, maximise natural light and views, and consider noise (open plan vs cellular living; the use of pocket doors), among other things.

A glass to glass corner window gives clients a view to the garden, with internal and external window seats.

A great book to read if you are interested in designing happy spaces is Happy by Design by Ben Channon.

We love working with clients to understand their specific needs and to transform the way they live with sensitive and considered designs that are perfectly tailored to their site and requirements.
