Planning Permission Granted for Retrofit in Bradford on Avon!

We’re absolutely delighted that this week we received planning permission for the deep retrofit, over-cladding and rooftop extensions for a bungalow which is adjacent to the Tithe Barn in Bradford-on-Avon , which is a a Grade I listed barn in Pound Lane, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, England. It was part of a medieval grange belonging to Shaftesbury Abbey and was built in the early 14th century, with a granary dated to about 1400. Working in the context of an historic asset such as this requires careful design, sensitive handling of materials, and a clear planning strategy. We worked closely with Plainview Planning to assist in preparing documents for the planning application, and for engaging in negotiations with the case officer, who took a helpful and collaborative approach to the determination.

Our proposals to use external woodfibre insulation, and Western Red Cedar shingle cladding to the walls and roof began as a contentious approach, but project architect Maria produced some fantastic realistic visualisations and ‘bay studies’ to demonstrate that the approach is an appropriate, ecological solution to this sensitive site. The tithe barn itself has an incredible timber structure to the roof, which we referred to, whilst highlighting that the shingles would have a very similar colour, scale and texture as the existing re-constituted concrete, stone effect cladding.

We’ll be starting technical design work within the next few weeks to get the project underway on site, and help to create an amazing sustainable home using ecological materials, which we have designed together with our dedicated clients.
